EMDR

EMDR Psychotherapy

Moving beyond what happened, towards feeling more fully yourself

Sometimes the past doesn’t stay in the past. Experiences we’ve been through can remain psychologically active in the present — showing up as anxiety, fear, shame or overwhelm, triggered by memories, situations or even bodily sensations.

What is EMDR?

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing — is an established, evidence-based therapeutic approach for trauma recovery. It uses bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps or sounds) while you focus on a difficult experience, helping the mind process unresolved material without having to repeatedly relive events.

You remain conscious and in control throughout. As processing unfolds, you may notice the emotional intensity of a memory reduce, new perspectives arise, or sensations shift in the body. You don’t have to tell me every detail of an experience if you don’t want to.

What EMDR can help with

  • Traumatic events and accidents
  • Difficult childhood experiences
  • Abuse or neglect
  • Difficult relationships
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Anxiety, panic and phobias
  • Shame and low self-worth
  • Distressing memories
  • Cumulative negative experiences

How I work

Our work together is collaborative. We begin with preparation and resource-building, so you feel steady and supported before any processing begins. From there, we move at a pace that is tailored to you and your comfort level — never rushed, never forced.

We use specialist software to provide the bilateral stimulation (or utilise “butterfly tapping”) in the processing phase. We work on the level of the body, mind and beliefs, and we can work on past, present or future scenarios. You are in control of this top-down / bottom-up approach, and can stop processing at any time if necessary.
